Don’t get it twisted friends, you may see me on a stage with the Queen-B herself,  Beth Moore, but this is not at all about me or anything I’ve done.

Jesus has, yet again, done what only HE can do:  he has pursued, loved and esteemed the broken in the grandest of ways.

I am not the big deal here, and neither is Beth.

Jesus took the main stage in the life of an exotic dancer, and He esteemed HER on a platform in front of 4,000 people.   How scandalous right?  There’s nobody like Him people.

Beth and I simply got a front row seat to watch with wide-eyed wonder as God pursued the heart of His daughter.

I am overwhelmed to have even had a pinky’s worth of involvement in it.

PS:  YES.  Beth Moore is all that you dream she would be.  She is fabulous in every way.  And YES, I was totally fan-girling and every time she opened her mouth to speak I wanted to take notes.  She is the real deal my friends.  Warm, gracious and nurturing, but with a fire in her bones for the Kingdom…not for religion or approval… but for things to be on earth as they are in heaven.  Love her BIG…we’re besties whether she would say so or not…I declare we are.

Inner-city ministry, lovin’ the poor and homeless, brings with it a unique way of life.

There are certain things in this line of work that you know you are signing up for:

SMELLY SEASON (begins the first day it’s really hot outside and all of your homeless friends haven’t taken you up on your offer of deodorant)
FIGHTS (Jerry Springer style)
the occasional pack of POPOs showing up (that’s police for all you suburb folk) to break up said fights

those are all the usual.

And so is theft.

K-Motel-sign
It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon when we rolled into the worst part of our city…the part of town with the worst reputation and the highest risk of EVERYTHING…you know…the part of town your mama told you to never go to.

We unloaded bags from the trunk, bags that were bursting at the seam with goodies, snacks, scarves and fun girly items…along with a card…meant to put into the hands of some of the roughest women of our city.

These women are society’s rejects, women who have had a financial value placed on their lives and an invisible scarlet letter permanently on their chest.  These women, in this motel…a motel that stands for only one reason…that they would be sold. Read More

Last night I witnessed a miracle.  A real, live, beautiful miracle.

Last night I watched a once forsaken be celebrated.

I witnessed a girl, who was once a commodity (bought, sold, traded), childhood stolen…standing and receiving a cake blazing with candles and gifts and hugs and kisses.

I saw a dear-one, once alone, in the presence of a table full. Read More

She met me at the office door, like usual, with a smile as wide as her face.

This is my normal greeting.

She is beautiful.  She is full of life.  She is changed.

But, this is a new reality for her.

When God found her, she was bruised, beaten, broken and used.  She was a prostitute, walking the streets night after night, alone and empty. Read More

“I object…your Honor…”

“All rise for the judge..” the Bailiff proclaimed, and we all stood as the judge made his way to the bench.

I am such a nerd…and I LOVE being a part of anything that I have only seen on TV.  When I watch a show I truly believe that I could do and be whoever the character is and pull off whatever insane plot has been laid out for them. When I watch 24 I believe that I am Jack Bauer…and that in every parking garage I will have to take down a terrorist. When I watch spy movies I desperately yearn to be a spy…Lord knows I’m nosey enough for it. I believe I could intubate someone or remove an organ simply because I have watched Grey’s Anatomy. So, this week…. how do I even put words to this… I watched a BABY come into the world.

Let me give you a little back story:

A precious woman in one of our programs, we’ll call her H, came into our lives 2 weeks ago.  She was transplanted here from another city.  When we met her she was broken, tired and at the end of her rope.  H has been in prostitution from a young age, and now at age 24, was carrying the child of her pimp….the man who had sold her countless times, abused her and made her life a living hell.

The day we met she was 2 weeks away from her due date.

I promptly told her:  “Do not go into labor in front of me.”  She laughed….I didn’t. Read More

No Superhero

By | Purchased, The Hub

I am no superhero.  I am no giant of the faith that woke up one day and said “Here am I Lord, SEND ME to ministry and leadership.”

I am the opposite.

I remember it like it was yesterday.  I started having headaches.  They were sharp and painful, sometimes blinding.  I remember the night that I picked up my laptop and started researching what could cause headaches that bad.  And that was the moment that everything changed.

Of course when you look up “severe headaches” the first thing that pops up is “You’re going to die because you have a brain tumor.”  That is what the first 6 pages on the google search page are full of.  Medical forums where people are telling their nightmarish stories of having a headache and then having 2 years to live.  That first night I researched a bit and then decided that it was too much negative to continue.
